The College Money Game: Debt or Denied for a Father of 3.

This is both motivational and de-motivational at the same time. It gives me hope that there is a formal education within 3 miles of home but it reminds me that money is the biggest barrier to entry.

Last year about this time I decided to prepare for the Fall semester at CCBC. I took a day off of work, scheduled to take both of the placement exams early, and planned to go straight into admissions/financial aid once I passed. (Optimistic, huh!) Everything was going according to plan, I took the tests and sat with a student adviser to discuss a curriculum for me to follow, all I had to do was sign up.

While I waited for my turn in the financial aid office I overheard the conversation going on inside:

A student asked, “How many times can I fail a class and still keep financial aid?”

The answer was the best advising I’ve ever heard when it comes to the College Money Game. ”You can fail three times as long as your GPA is a C or above. It’s still early in the semester though, if you drop the class before the payment deadline you can take it again in the fall without losing money from your grant.”

I took my turn when they were done and stated that I didn’t want to go into debt to get through Community College. My advise was to fill out the FAFSA application, look into local scholarships online, and register for classes early as they tend to fill up quickly. Over the next few nights I filled out the FAFSA application and was denied based on income despite being the only employed adult in a family of 5 (I made $3,000 more than the cutoff, poverty). I looked into local scholarships but many were only for high school students, current interns, or current undergrads. I simply didn’t meet the criteria. When it came time to look at registration my confidence was in shambles, my bank account was already stretched thin, and the classes I “needed” were offered in the middle of the day 3 days a week. The dice were clearly stacked against me.

The local Community College clearly has the market cornered and it’s classes filled with those willing to go in debt or able to receive grants. It will undoubtedly go on without me since I still haven’t found a way to cover the costs and provide for my family. However, it is springtime again, course catalogs are in the mail, and I’m sitting here wondering if this year will be the one that I finally find a way to complete my degree without losing the College Money Game.
